History
Yoshiho Niwata Sensei, who was our teacher, established the gShinbukan-dojoh in Osaka as a place for the practice of Iai in 1969. He was a direct student of Ikki Yoshizawa Sensei who had handed down "Hoki-ryu" in the Kyoto area before World War II.@

Whether Katayama-ryu iai-kenjutsu is still practiced elsewhere in Japan outside of our group is not clearly known. However, Seitei Iai, Hoki-ryu iaijutsu, and Katayama-ryu iai-kenjutsu were taught to us by Yoshiho Niwata Sensei in this dojo.

After the death of Yoshiho Niwata sensei and the closing of the Shinbukan dojo in 2008, we invited Hanshi 8-dan Teruo Ikeda Sensei as our teacher of Seitei-iai, and established The Hoki-ryu Ikkankai. Our group belongs to Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei, and is teaching Hoki-ryu iai in Osaka.

@History of the group name
Hoki-ryu (Katayama-ryu is another common name seen) iai was founded by Katayama Hoki-no-kami Fujiwara Hisayasu who is generally said to have lived from 1575 to 1650.

In 1596 Hisayasu spent time on Mt. Atago in Kyoto, saw the character of "Kan" in the dream. Inspired by this, established his own Ryu and naming it gIkkan-Ryuh ialso called Hoki-ryu or Katayama-ryu from long agoj.

Because of is, we adopted "Ikkan-" in the name of our group.
